Pool Maintenance

As fun as it is to own a pool, it also takes some important cleaning and maintenance. Without basic pool care, your pool may develop algae, the water may change colors, the water may irritate eyes and skin, or many other serious problems. The good news is that a few simple steps and basic procedures can prevent problems like these. OK Pool Service has put together the following quick reference tips for basic pool care for your convenience.

How to Clean Your Filter
Sand Filter (once a week):

  • Turn pump off
  • Turn multiport handle to backwash
  • Turn pump on for 1-2 minutes
  • Turn pump off
  • Turn multiport handle to rinse
  • Turn pump on for 30 seconds
  • Turn pump off
  • Return multiport handle to filter position
  • Turn pump on

Cartridge Filter (once every 2-4 weeks):

  • Turn pump off
  • Remove filter element
  • Using garden hose, spray folds of element to remove dirt and debris
  • Replace filter element and reinstall filter lid
  • Turn pump on, check for leaks which may indicate worn O-ring or misaligned lid

How to Clean Your Pump Basket

  • Turn pump off
  • Remove pump lid
  • Remove basket *
  • Using garden hose or fingers - remove leaves and debris from basket. Do not bang basket on hard surface - basket may crack.
  • Replace clean basket in pump
  • Refill pump with water for priming (about 1-2 quarts waters)
  • Replace pump lid ** - be sure to clean any dirt or debris from lid O-ring first
  • Turn pump on - stay with pump until system has fully restarted (when water is pumping from jets and normal pressure is restored)
  • *When removing basket for cleaning make sure debris from basket does not fall back into pump - this could cause a clogged impeller
  • **Clean & lube lid O-ring monthly

How to Vacuum Your Pool

  • Set up Cleaning Equipment:
  • Attach vac head to pole
  • Attach vac hose to vac head
  • Place vac head & pole in pool
  • Where hose breaks surface from vac head, begin submerging hose by pushing it under water which will purge air from hose
  • Insert end of hose in skimmer or vac line

Adjust valves:

  • Make sure skimmer or vac line valve is open
  • Close drain valve slowly
  • If using vac line, close skimmer halfway
  • Vacuum pool slowly moving vac head as far across pool as you can
  • When finished, disconnect end of hose from skimmer or vac line and remove equipment from pool
  • Restore valve settings *
*If pool was very dirty, clean basket & backwash or clean filter element

Hurricane Preparedness

Living in an area that is in the path of many hurricanes, we often receive requests for tips on how to prepare pools and spas for the storm to minimize damage. Below are our suggestions for the best procedures to prepare your pool and spa.

Before the Storm
Pools:

  1. Do not empty your pool or lower it’s water level. It is not necessary to drain water from your pool.
  2. Let it overflow; high water levels in your pool will protect your tile and marble finish from flying debris. Runoff will be the same as a street, tennis court, or saturated ground.
  3. Turn off all electrical power to your pool at the breaker. This includes pump, lighting, chlorinators, etc.
  4. Remove all loose items from the pool area. All patio furniture, pool toys, pool maintenance equipment should be secured. Do not throw patio furniture into the pool; doing so could cause damage to your pool finish.
  5. Super chlorinate your pool. This will help prevent algae from forming and the pool water could be used for washing or flushing toilets if municipal supplies fail.
  6. Remove and store removable child safety fencing. Remember to install the deck caps.

Portable Spas:

  1. Do not drain your spa. An empty portable spa may be moved and damaged by powerful winds.
  2. Turn off all electrical power to your spa at the breaker.
  3. Remove your spa cover. Store it inside to avoid damage or loss.
  4. Remove all loose items from the spa area and store inside.
  5. Super chlorinate your spa. This will help prevent bacteria from forming.

After the Storm
Pools:

  1. Replace child safety fencing. Store the deck caps for future use.
  2. Do not empty your pool. Even if your pool is full of debris, high ground water levels after the storm could cause structural damage - wait until water levels fall back to normal.
  3. Super chlorinate your pool. Remove as much debris as possible. Take a sample of water to your local pool professional for analysis at first chance.
  4. Check pool system with electricity off for signs of damage. Look for signs of water intrusion or broken pipes, cracks in filter, etc. If you have any doubt call your local pool professional before turning on power.
  5. Be aware! Some chlorine feeders need special restart care. If you use an automatic chemical feeder, check with your local pool or spa professional before restarting.

Portable Spas:

  1. Visually check the spa shell, wood cabinet, and equipment pack for broken pipes, cracks, and broken or loose electric wires.
  2. Adjust water level back to proper height.
  3. Once you have checked your equipment and wiring and there are no visible broken pipes or cut loose wiring, put your breaker on and test the GFIC breaker system (electrical power to the spa must be available to test GFIC).
  4. Before any use of the spa water, it must be checked and analyzed by your local pool and spa professional for proper sanitizing levels.
