Hurricane
Preparedness
Living in an area
that is in the path of many hurricanes, we often receive requests for
tips on how to prepare pools and spas for the storm to minimize damage.
Below are our suggestions for the best procedures to prepare your pool
and spa.
Before the
Storm
Pools:
- Do not empty
your pool or lower it’s water level. It is not necessary to
drain water from your pool.
- Let it overflow;
high water levels in your pool will protect your tile and marble finish
from flying debris. Runoff will be the same as a street, tennis court,
or saturated ground.
- Turn off all
electrical power to your pool at the breaker. This includes pump,
lighting, chlorinators, etc.
- Remove all loose
items from the pool area. All patio furniture, pool toys, pool maintenance
equipment should be secured. Do not throw patio furniture into the
pool; doing so could cause damage to your pool finish.
- Super chlorinate
your pool. This will help prevent algae from forming and the pool
water could be used for washing or flushing toilets if municipal supplies
fail.
- Remove and store
removable child safety fencing. Remember to install the deck caps.
Portable Spas:
- Do not drain
your spa. An empty portable spa may be moved and damaged by powerful
winds.
- Turn off all
electrical power to your spa at the breaker.
- Remove your
spa cover. Store it inside to avoid damage or loss.
- Remove all loose
items from the spa area and store inside.
- Super chlorinate
your spa. This will help prevent bacteria from forming.
After the Storm
Pools:
- Replace child
safety fencing. Store the deck caps for future use.
- Do not empty
your pool. Even if your pool is full of debris, high ground water
levels after the storm could cause structural damage - wait until
water levels fall back to normal.
- Super chlorinate
your pool. Remove as much debris as possible. Take a sample of water
to your local pool professional for analysis at first chance.
- Check pool system
with electricity off for signs of damage. Look for signs of water
intrusion or broken pipes, cracks in filter, etc. If you have any
doubt call your local pool professional before turning on power.
- Be aware! Some
chlorine feeders need special restart care. If you use an automatic
chemical feeder, check with your local pool or spa professional before
restarting.
Portable
Spas:
- Visually check
the spa shell, wood cabinet, and equipment pack for broken pipes,
cracks, and broken or loose electric wires.
- Adjust water
level back to proper height.
- Once you have
checked your equipment and wiring and there are no visible broken
pipes or cut loose wiring, put your breaker on and test the GFIC breaker
system (electrical power to the spa must be available to test GFIC).
- Before any use
of the spa water, it must be checked and analyzed by your local pool
and spa professional for proper sanitizing levels.
